@Manadar: Feel free to kneel before me ingame, IGN=Zexion Sixtin

@Kishin: Nirvana mostly isn't selfpitying/hating lyrics, as is Nightwish's, they just deal with dark themes, such as in 10th Man Down, killing to live, and many of their songs is just based on books/operas/other stories.
Metallica, their most selfdestructive songs are actually about whole other things.
To Live Is To Die is about the death of Cliff Burton. Fade to Black about the loss of James' favorite amp>.<
And in most of Nirvanas songs you can make out the lyrics by ear.
That isn't the case with the song from the first post.
However, yes AiC is pretty self-destructive, omni-hating songs.

you need to turn off the mtv and the radio rap, that will get you no where.... so many closed-minded individuals in todays society. Mainstream RAP is CRAP! not underground. True hip-hop fans dont want to listen to bling bling or cars and hoes. Thats not what hip-hop is about. real hip-hop exploits politics, talks about economic issues, war, crime, and living life on the bottom of the totempole. Basing opinions on rappers such as Ludakris, Chingy, 50 cent, the game or any of those fakes is the moronic move that all ignorant people make to stereotype the genre. Try listening to Immortal Technique, Binary Star, or Sage francis. Saying they dont have talent is also and underminded statement. Not everyone can make lyrical flow sound good.

I not only listen to underground hip-hop but almost everything, except country and techno. I give them credit because you still need talent to make that music, but i just dont prefer it.

I love it how many of those supporting old-school hip hop and rap (me too!) are giving examples of good bands to listen to yet all the haters and close-minded individuals of the thread don't care enough to check them out. I want all of you to at least check out the bands (yes bands, theres more than one ya know) and come back with a response. However positive or negative I don't care. I recommend Run DMC or something. I've always liked them, and to clarify I AM NOT A RAP FAN. What I mean is the mainstream MTV rap of today with 50 Cent and Usher and stuff. My brother listens to that.

Stop being so ignorant and listen to other music. It won't kill you.

don't mix new school rap with old school rap. Lyrically rapping is the most difficult thing to do in music. Not that I like much rap.....but give credit to the artists that perform it.(unless that artist is puff daddy)

Pah, you're all fools to like genres or bands... every genre and every band gets repetitive. Same old instruments, same old sounds, same old style, same old themes.

I listen to anime theme music :P

Such a variety! Such a mix! So many different sounds! And occasionally cutsey-cutsey girlie songs!

While I hate most of the rappers today as Bling-Bling bitches & ho's singers, that doesn't mean all rap is bad. There have been many rap artists whose songs often had a meaning behind them, something you could break down on an intellectual level. For a couple of examples, try listening to certain Coolio songs, stuff by Grandmaster Flash or The Sugarhill Gang. Some Run DMC songs too.

More modern stuff unfortunately follows the stereotype because that's what the kids demand and the artists are in it to make money and be famous. However, even some modern songs are funny, I can probably name a couple of songs by Eminem or Will Smith that bring a smile to my face regardless of their personal beliefs ("You can't like Eminem he's a homophobe" or "You can't like Will Smith cause he's a little racist"). It's the songs that promote the sort of behaviour we don't want as a society that need to be toned down, but then it runs into the old "Freedom of Expression" thingy modern societies hold so dear.

I think the real telling fact here is that when someone said "RAP sucks" (or something to that effect) there was way more in agreement than opposed. For instance if I had said "Classical music sucks!) I would have been drawn and quartered, by at least 50% of the posters. I would bet we would get about a 50/50 split on all genres of music EXCEPT rap. I think that speaks volumes.

I hear "I like all kinds of music except rap" all the time. Try and stick in any other genre into that sentance and it does not ring true.

Also, posters are saying we havent heard the "good rap artists". Well I would suggest that "hear one heard them all" would apply here. Now before someone goes off on me, I know that statement is not 100% accurate, but once again, apply that statement to all genres of music and it is 10x more accurate when rap is mentioned.

Rap can be performed by someone who cannot sing, cannot read or write music, nor play any musical instrument. Again, this can be true in other genres, but this could apply to the BEST rap artists, not so in other genres.

In case you haven't guessed, I like all forms of music...except rap.

Skean Dau, your logic is so flawed, i dunno why you even bothered posting here. Then again, we got so many illogical posts on here, I should be used to it...this is the internet after all.

I mean, you've pretty much limited your selection group, when you decide to pick only Guild Wars players. How do you know the gameplay style of Guild Wars doesn't attract a certain type of person, that favors a certain type of music? Better yet, how do you know that certain type of person, isn't biased against rap?

"I like all kinds of music, except country" sure rings true for me, and many of my friends. Perhaps we're just biased against country, but that's one group that likes rap, and doesn't like country. Perhaps our selection group isn't that fair, but then again, neither is yours.

You are so incredibly ignorant with all that fecal matter you just spewed out of your mouth. What is YOUR musical potential? Are you out there releasing CDs? Do you have any kind of gift with your MOUTH, TONGUE, VOCAL CHORDS, ANYTHING pertaining to music that flows out of your mouth? Music isn't just done through your fingers. I find the Lead Singer in a band to be a rather important part, yet that guy/girl may not have ANY musical talent in playing a guitar, or the piano, or any other sort of instrument. Still, the sounds that flow from his/her mouth, could be FAR better than any singing/rapping I could do, or anyone else for that matter.

I LOVE how you admit to your statement not being 100% accurate, yet you still try to use it to back up another of your claims, as if it WAS 100% accurate. To me, heard one country artist, heard them all. Still, it's not gonna lead to me spewing filth over how bad country music is, like you, and so many others do with rap

I say it all the time to people, "OPEN UP YOUR MINDS"
You don't have to like rap, but it exists, there are people who do like it. It's ART, and you can't disrespect art. Someone put time, and energy into it, it's an expression of their soul. You may not like what they have to offer, but then walk away, or DEAL WITH IT.

I just HAD to quote this one again. This is the most ignorant statement of them all. It's like you're trying to make a Rap artist look like a complete idiot, and disrespecting those who have made it to the top of the game. Your statements, that have NO supporting arguments, made YOU look like the ignorant one...

I dont belive in musical genres. If its good music youll know it, wether its "your type" of music or not.

EDIT: I honestly do not see rap as music, I see it as a raw form of art. If prose and poetry can be considered art then rap takes those forms to the next lvl. That is not saying that its bad mind you, just not music.

Rap is a Business. It's only function is to make money. It is corporate america cashing in on HIP HOP culture. All rap and rap artists sound the same. Of coarse the same is true for the corporate blend of all popular music that is repititously flooding the radio and television waves. Music is art and thus has its true artists in any medium. I prefer artists, so I dont listen to the radio or watch videos because you will rarely find them there.

So, if rap is not music, yet rap is art, then does that mean music is not art? I would HIGHLY disagree with you if that's what you're saying

I'll quote it again then...but i'll Bold the hotspots there, so maybe you can understand where my response to your statement came from. I have always considered music a form of art. It's not the only artwork a person can come up with, just one form of it. You state that prose and poetry are art, and that rap apparently falls into the category of prose and poetry, just taken to the next level. you further state that rap is not music, where I would disagree, since a melody is generally applied to it, along with a beat. If you state that spoken word, like poetry, with a beat and a melody, is art, but not music, then I question if you really think music is art, because to me that is very clearly music. It seems rap has a different structure than other forms of music, but I would think it qualifies as music.

I dunno, I think we need a definition on Music, and Art, shoot, maybe a definition on Rap as well

I dont understand how anyone could like rap... I mean, mabye if you liked it when you first heard it, you might get the CD or somthing, but it is SO repetitive... its not even funny. I personaly like most forms of Pop, because they all sound different to me and they all have some new thing about them (again, to me...), but I particulary like Latin American music (e.g. Shakira) music you can tango to.

have you listened to much Tupac? Amazingly enough, it's still very much listenable to this day. What makes me sad, is how many other artists from today take samples from his music. Although, how many artists did he take samples from? Some research of course would turn up this information, but does it really matter? In the end, it's still music, and some music done today might have been done before, hundreds of years ago, you NEVER know.(unless you got a time machine) It doesn't seem like many people have the ability to revolutionize an industry, or art, or ANYTHING for that matter, nor the ability to Invent something new. Most people seem to like to add on to something, or improve it...it's so hard to come up with something new.

Shoot, YOU or anyone else, try creating a new sound...see how [sarcasm] EASILY [/sarcasm] it comes to you. If you succeed, don't forget to send some props my way on your CD, for challenging you thru this post.

There are too many retards in the post to reply to all at once. So, I will begin with a series of generalities.

Your preference in music is by no means a measure of "good taste". In fact, if I were to follow in the paths of logic many people have displayed, I could criticize you all for having crappy taste - I would be able to argue that orchestral pieces are "true" music. Perhaps not a very strong backing, but it would be as valid as most of the drivel I've read so far. Get over yourself. You are not a musical-genius-god-of-everything-define-tastes-in-your-narrow-minded-stupidity. Actually, I would like to correct what I said. The second half of that title beginning with "narrow" would apply most people here.

In short, as soon as you make an umbrella statement like "rap sucksorz!" or a retarded anecdote such as "kant spel CRAP withowt RAP lolorz hahahahhh lolozzz sucksozr!", you lose all credibility.
